Match Report: A Grade, 2013-14 Round 3

The 3rds travelled away to Narre North Reserve (home of the 2010/11 premiership win),to take on their bitter arch rivals. Captain Zach won the toss and sent the boys into bat on a perfect 28C batting day, and bat they absolutely did – Coggsy put Narre’s attack to the sword and posted his first ever results vault fifty with a chanceless 60, setting the platform for the Nick Konings show as Nick smashed 71* and got the Roo total to 9/259 off the full 72 overs, something the thirds haven’t done for some time.

By contrast, the boys came out to defend their total in rain interrupted and freezing conditions. Narre did ok early but couldn’t do much against the McGrath-like Gavin Fist (1 wicket) who did not waver from a beautiful off-stump line and tightened it up considerably. Ponton (2/54 off 13) and Nick Konings (3/72 off 18) then cut through the middle order leaving Narre North in trouble. However, despite the brave effort of Chris Konings bowling on one leg (2/47 off 15), their last wicket fought hard and was helped by some incredibly dubious ‘umpiring’ ‘decisions’. The game came down to the last ball when scores were level but the North batsman couldn’t get man of the match Nick Konings away, ending in a controversial tie.

This week the boys play undefeated Lynbrook at home, despite playing them in Round 1 for an outright loss. However, with a strengthened lineup and the batting starting to click, Lynbrook will underestimate the boys at their own peril.
