New Club Coach – Ian Callen

The club executive wishes to announce a change in our coaching panel structure for the season following a review with appointed playing coach Andrew O’Meara. Having not been successful in being able to appoint a non playing coach at the start of the season, Owie expressed the wish to fill the position as coach and has seen us through the opening of the new season , however the opportunity to have an experienced non playing coach was always the preference.

Ian Callen as our specialist coach has freed up his time to take on the role as full time coach with Owie as his assistant. This affords Owie the chance to focus more on his own game and to handle increased work commitments whilst learning working under Ian. Ian has an impressive record as a first class Australian cricketer, having played a test against India in Adelaide in the 1978/79 series in which he took six wickets. A member of the Victorian all time great cricketers, he played 36 Sheffield Shield games taking 159 wickets including six five wicket hauls and one ten wicket in a match. Ian has played in four Premier District premierships and together with a vast playing career as a professional in England over seven years, speaks for the experience we can benefit from at Coomoora. He has held a number of coaching positions in England , South Africa and India at a high level as well as coached in Australia at, Box Hill, Carlton, Footscray and Blackburn cricket clubs.

Capping off his distinguished career and obvious love of the game, Ian has been making his own brand of bats since 1985 and has his own plantation, Blue Willow project plantation , the only one of its kind in the world all developed utilising sustainable forest management principles, at Healesville. We are sure our development as a club will benefit greatly from Ian’s knowledge and experience and will no doubt afford all members the opportunity to be the best they can be at their cricket.
