Round 1 – 3rd XI Match Report. MUST READ!!!

A combination of unavailable players and outstanding form over the past 2 seasons saw the majority of our previous 4th XI make the step up to A grade for round 1, and once again it was the inspirational leader in Sean ‘Franga’ Francis taking the reins against Fountain Gate.

The Gators won the toss and batted, and at 2/62 it was looking as though the step up to A grade may have proven a struggle. Enter Mik Quinless (4/34) and youngster Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts-on (4/28), who didn’t want a bar of any doubting thoughts and proceeded to rip the opposition apart for 112 off 51 overs!

Some good bowling and poor batting saw the game in the balance with us falling to 4/19 overnight.

It’ safe to say that we couldn’t get off to a worse start on day 2, with returning fan favourite the Vu-Dogg turning up at 1:15pm and being timed out after being not out overnight. The fall of another wicket saw us at 6/35, but with regular first XI player Lance Baptist (unavailable due to a wedding in Perth the first week) coming in, we were still a slight chance.

Unfortunately we lost 2 more wickets to be 9/63 (still 50 runs shy of victory), but what followed was nothing short of gobsmacking. Joined by the surprisingly sober Buster (Buzz), the two of them started sending balls regularly into orbit, and within the space of 8 overs slammed on a 99 run match-winning partnership! Buzz eventually stumped for 53 and Lance unbeaten on 69.

With the euphoric feeling of victory (equalled by the shock horror of the Gators), the boys decided they weren’t yet satisfied, and came out firing with the ball in the 2nd innings. Mik Quinless continued his impressive form with the ball from the week before taking another 4 wickets, and in a piece of inspirational captaincy Franga brought himself on to claim 3/15 (including a 2 wicket maiden), not only taking his first wicket for the club (he classifies himself as a bowler and it’s his 5th season for the club), but ripping the heart out of the Fountain Gate lower order to roll them for 82!

With 6 overs remaining in the game the equation was simple: 33 runs from 6 overs to claim the most unlikely outright victory in history.

Lance opened up with Vakshan and made a quick fire 19 before Lance was stumped. Buzz then came in and failed to continue his form of the first innings to make a golden duck. Wanting to make a game of it, Vakshan then proceeded to unbelievably face a maiden and leave the game teetering on knife’s edge! Enter man of the moment Mik Quinless to calmly steer the boys home in the final over and 10 points were in the bag!

This is undoubtedly the most astounding team performance ever witnessed by the writer, and to be 1 wicket away from a 50 run loss and then turn it into an outright victory 3 hours later is simply an amazing team effort!

Well done boys and let the good times continue to roll this week away against Narre Warren!

The 4th XI also managed to have a win after Hampton Park forfeited.
