Round 1 Match Report – Turf 1 with Paul Hill

There was a good feeling amongst the boys as we ventured to the showgrounds for the first game of the new season. Dillon Gemmell-Smith, English import Joey Hawke and Sri Lankan import Thanura Helambage all made their debuts.

We won the toss and batted on what looked like a very good, dry wicket. We got off to a good, steady start before losing Owie (13) and Thanura (3) in quick succession. Planky (24) and Johno (16) steadied that ship and had the Roo looking good at 2/61 at drinks. It was all downhill from there. We lost a very disappointing 8/32, to be all out 93.

The task as we went out to field was obviously a very difficult one against one of the better teams in the comp, but to the boys credit, they responded magnificently and had Dandy West extremely nervous at 8/85, but they got the required runs and beat us 8 down. Some great bowling performances from Thanura (3/23), Joey (3/18) and Luke Vincent (1/16).

Despite probably our best performance with the ball back in Turf 1, the result was bitterly disappointing. A very good cricket team was there for the taking and we fell only probably 20 runs short of what would have been a great start to the season.

Nevertheless, there were some very positive signs and the weekend has now gone. We look forward to what we can achieve in 2013/14.
