Round 4 – Fourth XI Match Report

There are only 3 guarantees in life, death, taxes and when the 4s play Dandy West it’s always a doozy!!

Being thrown in to bat suited us nicely (or so we thought). A poor innings as a whole saw us bailed out for 87 (27 overs) with only Riley ‘Pelican’ Fullerton (29) posting any resistance. The Bulls came out firing and were in a confident mood sending many deliveries to the boundary! With a spread of wicket takers the Wests ended up 6/204 at close of play.

Declaring before a ball had been bowled in week 2 indicated the Wests were looking for a quick end and 10 points, but they forgot to send us the memo! The Roos were hell-bent on laying waste to their plans. A solid effort saw us bat 61 overs for our 171. Top innings’ by Jake ‘The Snake’ Robertson (44), Pelican Fullerton (36) and a swash buckling and quite unbelievable 26 from Mad Dog Lusby (including a 6 over backward point that is yet to land) had us pass their score, and sit 54 ahead with 11 overs to play. Another highlight was the captain falling onto his stumps to be dismissed hit wicket after attempting to play a pull shot.

Dandy West had a go at the total but the never say die attitude of the Roo had them reeling on 7/41,almost claiming one of the unlikeliest outright victories! The Pelican again the destroyer with 5/20.

In the end a great comeback by the boys, and it was fantastic to see the returning faces of Matty Devereaux and club legend Simon Kingsley Austen (who was on a hat trick in the 2nd innings!) having a run around.
