Round Five – First XI Match Report

Coming up against top of the table Cranbourne on their own patch was always going to be a tough task, but winning the toss and batting we thought we could give ourselves a good chance by posting a decent score on the board. Unfortunately this was not to be the case as we were routed in the 27th over for a paltry 56. The only highlight being Michael ‘Fish’ Blackburn’s highest Turf 1 score of 19.

We started brilliantly with the ball, with Joey Hawke removing their opener in the opening over, but from here it was a struggle as Cranbourne reached 4/163 declared after 37 overs. Batting again we finished the day on a promising 1/30, with Sylvester in his first game looking the goods for a big score in week 2.

The wet conditions saw a delayed start to week 2, and the large amount of rain over the previous 2 days had unfortunately placed a lot of life into the normally placid wicket conditions at Casey Fields. Despite a lot of fight from our middle order (in particular Lance Baptist with 29 not out batting the innings from number 3), we eventually succumbed for a more promising 108.

It has been a tough start for the boys, but with more players available from here on in and the hard work being put in at training we are looking to improve throughout the season (starting this week against Buckley Ridges).
